Why I love This American Life
My last year in law school, I just happened to take Banking Law and Secured Transactions. I learned all about mortgage back securities, tranches, commercial paper, and lots of other stuff. So, when the sub-prime lending market went down the tubes, I felt like I had a semi, kind of, sort of understanding of what was happening. But as it got worse and worse and more and more confusing, I happened across a podcast from This American Life called The Giant Pool of Money. A joint effort from This American Life and NPR, it did an amazing job of explaining exactly what was happening and what caused it. I thought it was fantastic and apparently so did the New York Times.
Well, the same people have come together again to discuss this current crisis. I have to say that I have a much better understanding of the whole thing, why it is serious, and what is going on. Still scary and still huge, but at least I have an idea. The new show is Another Frightening Show About the Economy and while it is frightening, it is also very informative.
