12 Hours in My Day

Yesterday was supposed to look like this:
1. Take Ellie to doctor.
2. Pick up Joe at work.
3. Eat a quick dinner.
4. Head to choir practice at new church.

Well, the doctor part went as planned. Ellie's thrush is gone and I'm so relieved because I've heard that stuff can really stick around. However, the rest of the day got off track and here's how it went:

3:30pm - Call Joe and discover that it's raining really hard on his side of town - like there's flooding and stuff. Since traffic is bad at rush hour on a good day, I grab some snacks for Ellie and I and start driving around 3:55. It takes 20 minutes to get there with no traffic.

4:25 - I've abandoned the highway and I'm actually making really good time on regular roads. There are very deep pools of water everywhere and I'm so glad I have an SUV. I've driven the first 10 miles of the trip without much trouble. Two miles to go.

4:30 - I'm stuck in traffic. The last two miles to Joe's work is a total nightmare. It takes me 45 minutes to finally get to his office.

5:15 - Pick up Joe. I suggest we just get dinner somewhere nearby since the roads are so bad. We go to the closest place we know of but it's closed. We are now committed to a certain route home so off we go - very slowly. We spend 30 minutes at one intersection alone and by 6:30 we have gone about three miles. We finally stop at the mall near where we are to get dinner.

6:30 - Ellie has now been in her carseat for three hours. Yeah, she slept the first hour but now she's miserable. So, we get Chinese for dinner and by 7:15 are back in the car.

7:30 - Arrive home. Joe walks the dogs while I give Ellie a bath.

8:00 - Ellie's asleep. Joe and I crawl into bed ourselves. So much for choir.

12:00am - Ellie's occasional cough is apparently now a cold. She wakes up on and off for a few hours.

2:30 - Ellie can't sleep because she's too congested. We get out the saline and the Tylenol. She's now wide awake and wants to play with Daddy. And the remote for the AC. And the dogs. And whatever else she can get her hands on. Finally, around 3:00, she falls back asleep.

3:30 - Just as I'm falling back asleep, I hear a dog puking. I jump out of bed to figure out what's going on. I get up so fast that Ellie wakes up and starts crying. Yes, Sebastian has puked on the rug. I'm so glad we have tile. I clean it up and throw the rug in the wash. I go back to the bedroom and Ellie is playing happily with Joe. Why sleep when it's so much fun to be awake all night? I manage to get her interested in nursing and she calms back down quickly and goes back to sleep.

Oh, and this is outside the 12-hour window, but at 4:00 Sebastian threw up again. Joe cleaned it up this time. He laid back down for 10 minutes and then got up to head to work.
