You'll get to skip winters! I've only been to PR as a tourist (at xmas, no less) and while some of it was a little alien (it's an ISLAND! TROPICAL) parts of it were very familiar to the NM in me(the culture, language, the architecture, etc. Basically the spanish influence.) Out in the relative boonies where wew stayed, there are these smoking (often literally) vans (like fedex trucks) that you can go buy a whole roasted chicken and plantains and whatnot from . So good.
I suspect it will be much more interesting than other bases!
