The joys of being new on campus:

I went to the bookstore last week to get my textbooks and got everything I needed. Or so I thought. In class yesterday, I found out that there was a photocopied set of materials that was in another part of the store. Now the store is quite a ways from the law school and my car is quite a ways in the other direction, but the materials are also online, so I thought I'd read it online.

The school has a wireless network, but I still wasn't connected. So, I go to the IT guy in my school and ask him to help me. He tells me that that's not his job, but he pulls up the page with the info. I ask him to print it but he says no - it's a secure page with sensitive information so I have to log on with my own ID. Now, the school has terminals all over, but you have to stand and there's no where to put my laptop as I'm following the online instructions form the connected computer.

So, I head to the library, log on, and find the page. But, there's no wireless signal in the library. So, I decide to print what I need and take it back to the wireless area. I tell the computer to print and it tells me I need to swipe my ID card somewhere. I go to the reference desk and the guy points me to the right printer and tells me to just swipe my student ID. I do this, but it says I have no money in my account. So I go back to the library guy and he tells me about this computer lab in the basement of the school with free printing.

I finally manage to find this lab and print the instructions. Now, I head back to the wireless area. I follow all the steps, but surprise, surprise, no connection. So, I go to the terminal to click on the "help, talk to IT" link. It doesn't work. I then click on "Contact IT", but the e-mail isn't set-up properly on that computer. Finally, I find a link that works and send an e-mail asking for help. Apparently, this is school procedure.

A few hours later, I get back an email form the University IT, asking me about URLs, ping, Blox monitors and some other crap. Although I consider myself competent with my computer, I have no idea what they are asking. I AIM my brother who heads IT for a university department. He has no idea what they want either. Finally, he tells me to just call him tomorrow, while at school, and he offers to help me.

Meanwhile, I never got to read my assignment.

PS - They guy was such a jerk about the stupid "highly sensitive, secure webpage" that I'm tempted to print it, copy it, and spread it all over Chapel Hill. But, I won't.
