What would you do?

ste_noniWe already signed a lease for a house in Colorado, and while we signed two weeks ago, our lease starts 1 July. Nothing was said about when to pay our deposit/first months rent but I had the bank send the checks dated 1 July. Just now I got an email from the manager asking if there is a problem because the landlord had not received the check yet.
When I explained all of the above, they seemed fine but I didn't really appreciate in insinuation that we were paying late. Plus, on top of all our other expenses in the last two weeks (over $2000 so far), the check was over $4000 (kind of a larger than normal deposit) and we still dont have our current deposit back. Why would I pay early?
