I've been nursing for how long, now?  Four and a half years, total.  Monday, I had a very painful lump/spot under my arm.  It hurt enough that I was sure it was a lymph node and I was trying to hold my arm away form my body because it was painful.  Today, I finally went to the doctor, only to find out that it is almost certainly a plugged duct way high up.  It's funny because I know what plugged ducts are and I've had one before but because this pain was practically in my armpit, it never even occurred to me that is could be breastfeeding-related.

It's absolutely amazing how spread-out breast tissue is! We learned about some of that in the class I took from a lactation consultant and how it relates to not being able to judge milk output from breast size, since the milk-making tissue is so spread out. Pretty amazing!

And I hope you feel better! I've had a milk bleb which I understand is like a plugged duct right at the nipple, and I felt completely awful.

Thanks! I'm mostly feeling better. It's weird - I actually got my first cracked nipple ever when Frisco had the flu. I had him nurse on the other side for about 18 hours. I didn't notice any issues, but I'm sure it helped lead to the plug.
