Sad news

The daughter of one of my rather new co-workers (actually the attorney who got the job I almost got) died of dengue this morning.  She was 8 years old.   I am so upset for poor R and her family.  I just feel sick to my stomach.  I also want to grab Ellie and get in a plane and not come back.  This is the second daughter of someone I work with who has died of dengue.  Supposedly, it is rare, but it freaks me out that I know two people in this situation.

I don't know R very well, so I will probably just get her a card, but I wish there was something I could do.  Of course, there's not much you can do for someone after this sort of loss.

It scares me sometimes how vulnerable being a mother has made me.

Oh, that is so terrible and scary. I had no idea that dengue was a problem down there.

Only 8 years old. Damn.

I miss you, doll.

Miss you, too.

The weird thing is that when I lived in Brazil, dengue was a *huge* problem, but I never knew anyone, or even knew someone who knew someone, who died of it.

How sad! It seems completely rational to want to pull Ellie in close and protect her.

I remember TV ads in Guatemala with warnings about dengue, and I had one friend who did get it, but the only stories I heard of people dying were those who didn't get treated from a friend who worked in infectious disease clinics there.

I'd be freaking out too! I looked at the Wikipedia entry on dengue and it looks pretty difficult to diagnose--it's similar to a simple fever with a rash.

BTW, how are you and the baby doing?
