That was the text message Joe sent me after touring Homestead yesterday. Apparently, it didn't look all that great, the only decent places to buy a home were behind gates, and the few military people he talked to hated living there. Joe said it was just more of the same (referring to Puerto Rico), only with immigrants from all over and not just Puerto Ricans. (That sound sort of negative but I think what he was trying to say was that diversity would be a plus but that it still suffered from all the problems PR has.)

And, after all that, he went to the SF unit where they supposedly want him, the guy who he was supposed to contact was in the building, but he wouldn't answer his phone and no one who came out or went in the building was willing to tell the guy Joe was there. Joe said, yeah, they are SF so maybe they are very locked up but the fact that the guy won't respond to Joe's emails or phone calls doesn't make it seem very welcoming.

So, we are no longer considering Miami as an option. Joe will hopefully talk to the assignment guy this week and see if something new has come up or if we can go to DC as originally planned.

I know - keep up the DC vibes. My mom is hoping for Ft. Carson (near Denver) which would be fine to, although I don't think it's available.

Homestead's a pit. Even those of us who grew up in Miami think Homestead's a pit. It never even seemed like it was part of the same area, you know? And if memory serves, it was one of the most rednecky areas of South Florida because of its remoteness.

D.C. sounds good.

The weird thing is that on some level, I knew that. I'm not exactly sure how - I suppose I must have heard that from some people at work or something. Anyway, I'm glad he checked it out on his own and now I don't feel like the bad guy.

Kind of sad, because I know he was thinking that it sounded like a good job, and it's a shame that it doesn't seem like a good place, but also yay a relief that you don't have to be the bad guy, at least.
