Surprise Surprise
Apr. 23rd, 2005 02:49 pmThis afternoon, I was supposed to go to this garden luncheon to "welcome new residents." I wasn't really excited about going but decided to go because a) my one neighbor my age was going and b) one of the women I know fairly well was planning it.
So I get there and my neighbor, L, says to me "Remember when you were asking about the purpose of this luncheon? Well, there was a purpose - look at the decorations." I look and hanging everywhere was all these beautiful little pink baby girl clothes. And about 50 women, all of whom are my neighbors, but many whom I didn't really even know.
I actually started to cry - it was a combination of surprise and feeling like "how could these people who don't even know me be so *nice* to me." I didn't even know what to say at first because I was so shocked.
So, we had wonderful food and desserts and I got to meet tons of neighbors I didn't know previously. Also, most of the neighbors I do know where there. The baby's room is now literally overflowing with gifts. I actually think I got more clothes than she will ever be able to wear.
It really surprised me how much it meant to me. I am new here and only know a handful of people. I've gotten sort of used to living alone the last few years. I just couldn't believe that so many people would spend their time and money on me. It meant a lot.
