Surf's Up!
Mar. 18th, 2007 08:15 pmThe highlight of this weekend was a chance to try surfing. Joe got a board a while back but all I've ever done with it is paddle around in pretty calm waters. yesterday, I actually tried riding the waves. It was extremely fun, even though all I did was lay down on the board. It's weird because until the end, you just have this sensation of being rushed along and, because the wave is behind you, you don't really experience it. All you know is that you are going really fast all of the sudden.
Of course, there are risks. It sounds obvious, but if you balance is too far forward, the nose will tip into the water and then the waves flips you. Not exactly fun, but not horrible either. Until the waves flips you and then the board comes crashing down on top of your head. That happened to me towards the end. I was so stunned I just stood there for a moment. I knew I had to face the waves to be ready for the next one and I knew I had to hold onto the board so it wouldn't smack me again but that's all I processed for a few seconds. Thankfully, my head feels fine today. However, the rest of me is very sore, but in a good way. And I have a giant bruise on my arm from hitting the board at some point. Still, it was really fun. I can see why people love it so much.
I finished all my plans for our part of the DC trip. I'm very excited. I completely forgot about finding someone to watch the dogs, however, P and O have moved back (to DC actually!) so they can't watch them. I'm hoping a friend will stay at the house - otherwise, they will be outside and Ill get a neighbor to walk them twice a day. Not ideal, but they will be okay.
