This is the sort of thing makes me afraid for Joe. Mortar attacks happen all the time in Iraq and rarely kill anyone. But when the mortar was properly aimed to hit something like a dining facility, this means that someone on the inside gave location information to the insurgents.

Joe tells me they are very careful about the non-Americans inside the gates and I know they check them as much as possible as well as watch activity inside the gates pretty carefully. But on a big base, it's almost a guarantee that at least one person who made it inside is working against you.

I guess the one thing that makes me happy is that even if Joe had been in Mosul, he's been way too busy to eat in the mess hall. Soldiers have been bringing him his meals while he's been working because he can't take a long enough break to eat lunch/dinner/etc. I was pretty angry last week that he had no time to even eat, but maybe it's not so bad after all.
