I think House is my new favorite show. Or close to favorite. I like it a lot. The show itself is sort of formulaic, but the character of House is so interesting that I look forward to watching.
I have some questions...
Why does he have a cane? Is it House or the actor?
What's his past relationship with the lawyer? Were they married?
Was he also involved with the cute doctor who works for him?
Anything else I should know?

Date: 2006-01-11 08:01 am (UTC)The cane: House had an infarction in his leg muscle which led to the death of the muscle, impaired movement, and constant pain (which is why the character is known for snarfing down Vicodin the way some of us go through M&Ms).
The lawyer: They were living together, but not married, I believe. When House had the infarction, she authorized a course of treatment that he would NOT have approved of had he been conscious at the time. The relationship went seriously downhill and then ended. Lawyer is now married to someone else who has recently developed chronic health problems/mobility issues, and now THAT relationship is under serious strain.
The cute doctor: She really, really, really likes House, and was rather aggressive about pursuing him last season. There's still some one-sided tension there.

Date: 2006-01-11 08:04 am (UTC)Cameron, the cute female doctor, likes/d him, and they went on one date (well, two, kind of), and my theory is that House likes her more than he'll admit. But he's also still hung up on Stacy.

Date: 2006-01-11 08:13 am (UTC)1. The cane. House had a major problem with one of his legs a few years ago. It was wrongly diagnosed at first, so he ended up going through surgery and losing a lot of muscle tissue. He's also in constant pain because of all this. So he takes a lot of vicodin. He's probaby addicted to the vicodin, but since he's got significant, real pain, taking him off the pain killers to get him unaddicted would be very problematic.
2. Stacy and House used to be lovers. I don't think they were ever married, but she had medical power of attorney for him when he went unconcious due to the leg problems above. At that time he wanted to avoid surgery and hope that another healing method would cure his leg. He knew that surgery would leave him crippled and in pain (as he currently is). However, the other method would a) quite possibly not work and b) quite possibly kill him. So when he was unconcious, Stacy used her Power of Attorney to authorize the surgery. He had a lot of trouble forgiving her for authorizing the surgery against his wishes. While recovering from the surgery he was enough of a bastard to her to drive her away. (No idea if the legal stuff behind this plot line is correct, but there it is.)
3. Which cute doctor? OK, Cameron (the cute female doctor), had a serious crush on him last season. Serious to the point where she essentially blackmailed him into a date. The date turned out to be sad and uncomfortable for both of them. She hasn't pursued him much since, but the other doctors seem to assume she's still crushed out on House. House seemed to be na little flattered, but otherwise not really interested and a little uncomfortable. Cameron had been married to a guy who died of cancer (pre-show), and House suspects Cameron has a thing for guys she can try to fix up. He doesn't want to be her fixer-upper project.
4. Other. The cute doctor who House called to check up on things ("Hi Honey, How are the kids?") is Wilson. He's House's best, and possibly only, friend. He's on his third wife, and will probably end up divorcing her, too. The cute, young blond doctor with the Australian accent is Chase. He betrayed House last season, and House basically kept him around so he could torture Chase. Chase's father was a famous doctor who recently died of cancer. House and Chase seem to have made up. But you never know. Foreman, the cute African American doctor, was arrested for some childhood stuff (B&E, I think), and House has never let him forget it. He challenges House on a regular basis.
I'm glad you're enjoying the show!

Date: 2006-01-11 08:17 am (UTC)Car crash? Maybe? I'm not sure. Definitely the character. Also? The actor is British.
What's his past relationship with the lawyer? Were they married?
Yes, now divorced, and apparently her second marriage is in trouble.
Was he also involved with the cute doctor who works for him?
Yes, I believe so.
Anything else I should know?
Uumm, not sure. I'm new to the show, myself. It is fun, though. I'm enjoying it, too.

Date: 2006-01-11 08:53 pm (UTC)House being this complete genius makes it all the more amusing, because the most memorable characters he's played in the past have all been quite, quite dim.
